Three new criminal laws came into effect across the country from Monday, bringing widespread changes in India's criminal justice system and ending colonial-era laws.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has replaced the Indian Penal Code while the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita has replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure. The Indian Evidence Act has been replaced by Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

The new laws incorporates provisions such as Zero FIR, online registration of police complaints, summonses through electronic modes and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes.
