New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairperson Keshav Chandra hoisted the national flag at the council's headquarters, Palika Kendra, commemorating India's 79th Independence Day.

The event was graced by NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Council Member Anil Valmiki, Secretary Tariq Thomas, senior officials, school students, and teachers, as per an official statement from the NDMC.

Security and fire personnel honored the occasion by presenting a guard of honour during the flag-raising ceremony.

In his speech, Chandra paid respects to freedom fighters, along with the armed and paramilitary forces, highlighting the bravery of teenage martyr Kanaklata Barua and the courage shown during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

"Freedom grants us rights, but also reminds us of our duties. Our freedom fighters envisioned an India that is educated, self-reliant, clean, just, and prosperous. It is our responsibility to realize that dream," he remarked.

The NDMC chief encouraged officers, employees, students, and citizens to collaborate in making the council the finest in the country, contributing to a better national capital.

In celebration, the NDMC illuminated significant buildings including Palika Kendra, NDCC Convention Centre, Connaught Place, Chandralok Building, and Lok Nayak Bhawan with approximately 37,500 tricoloured bulbs.

A display of 2,600 national flags adorned electric poles along avenue roads, while 36 floral boards and fountains wishing Independence Day greetings were set up throughout the NDMC area.
