Itanagar, Jul 3 (PTI): The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is set to boost the dairy sector in Arunachal Pradesh by establishing 'Milk Unions' and 'Milk Federations', according to an official statement.

In an ambitious endeavor, five milk unions will be formed based on the state's five river basins, with the project kicking off in Lohit, Namsai, and Lower Dibang Valley districts of the Lohit River basin, revealed S Roy, NDDB's Kolkata regional head, during a training session for enumerators and supervisors in Namsai's Chowkham circle on Wednesday.

Efforts are underway to establish similar milk unions in the Siang, Subansiri, Kameng, and Tirap basins. Ultimately, these unions will coalesce into a state-level 'milk federation', promising new opportunities in the dairy and allied sectors.

D Longri, director of the State Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, and Dairy Development department, underscored the importance of completing the survey work promptly, setting a deadline of July 31, 2025, for the Lohit basin survey.

Longri expressed concerns that several districts, despite their significant dairy potential, have lagged in establishing dairy cooperative societies.

This delay is impeding Arunachal's progress under the White Revolution 2.0, he noted, urging a concerted focus on initiating a milk union encompassing Lohit, Namsai, and Lower Dibang Valley as a model for others. He instructed district veterinary officers to prioritize the survey to ensure its timely completion.
