Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, June 12 (PTI): A 26-year-old man was apprehended after an encounter with police in the Ghatampur area on Thursday over charges of raping a six-year-old girl.
Identified as Shivam Sachan, alias Kallu, the accused sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the retaliatory police action.
The horrifying incident took place on Tuesday night when Sachan allegedly assaulted the minor, leaving her gravely injured. She was immediately rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary, police teams were conducting a search operation in the Ramsari jungle area upon receiving information about the accused's location.
The situation escalated when Sachan encountered the police team and opened fire using his country-made pistol.
One of the bullets hit the bulletproof jacket of Station House Officer (Ghatampur) Dhananjay Kumar Pandey, who narrowly escaped injury. DCP Chaudhary stated that police retaliated, leading to Sachan being shot in the leg.
Initially, Sachan attempted to evade capture by misleading the police, but he eventually confessed to the crime during interrogation, added the DCP.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ghatampur, Krishnakant Yadav, revealed that after the assault, Sachan returned home to change clothes and even participated in the search efforts with the victim's family.
