Verdict on Jallikattu, bullock-cart racing: SC upholds state laws allowing animal sports

In a victory for advocates of Jallikattu and bullock-cart racing, the Supreme Court on May 18, 2023, upheld the validity of laws made by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra governments for animal sports.

A 5-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court delivered a unanimous verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the two laws.

Jallikattu is a bull-taming sport played in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal festival.
