Mob attacks, sets police station on fire: cops accused of beating man to death in Assam

In a concerning incident, a police station in Assam was attacked by a mob. The violent crowd vandalised and set fire to the police station. The incident occurred in Batadrava in Nagaon district on May 21.

The violence occurred over allegations of a person's death while in police custody. A person named Safiqul Islam was travelling to Sivasagar to sell fish when he was detained by police, according to news reports.

Subsequently, Safiqul Islam's family were informed that he had died, and his body was sent to Nagaon civil hospital for an autopsy. Claiming that Safiqul died because he was beaten up by police, his agitated relatives placed his body in front of the police station and blocked the road.

Meanwhile, other villagers gathered and attacked the police station. Three people allegedly part of the violent mob had been arrested by May 21 evening.
