A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttarakhand has reportedly cancelled his daughter's wedding to a Muslim man.

Pauri municipal chairman Yashpal Benam took the decision after facing protests from various Hindutva outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Bhairav Sena, as per reports. Benam's effigy was burnt during a protest against the marriage on May 19.

"We strongly oppose such a marriage," the working president of district VHP Dipak Gaud had said.

Benam said that he had agreed to the marriage for his daughter's happiness, but cancelled it as he has to "listen to the voice of the public as well".

The wedding was slated for May 28, 2023.
