Agartala, Aug 26 (PTI) - In a significant judgment by a POCSO court in North Tripura, a 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl repeatedly. The court also imposed a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence on the victim's mother and elder sister for their complicity in the crime.
According to Assistant Public Prosecutor Sudharshan Sharma, Special POCSO Judge Angshuman Debbarma delivered the verdict on Monday. The main accused, Samir Naha, has been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 along with his life imprisonment. The victim's mother and sister, who admittedly assisted Naha in the assaults, received 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fines of Rs 10,000 each.
Over a span of more than a year, Samir Naha exploited the minor with the collusion of her mother and sister at their Dharmanagar subdivision home, Sharma reported. Despite the victim's attempts to inform her mother about the assaults, she was silenced with threats that Naha financially supported the family.
Desperate for aid and justice, the victim reached out to Child Line, an NGO, in January 2021. This led to a case being formally registered against Samir Naha at the Dharmanagar women's police station on April 3, 2021. The police promptly arrested Naha under rape charges, followed by the arrest of the victim's mother and elder sister.
