Korba, May 27 (PTI) Two individuals lost their lives, and another was injured after a boundary wall section of a coal mine collapsed on them in Chhattisgarh's Korba district on Tuesday, according to police reports.

The tragic incident transpired in the early hours at the South Eastern Coalfields Limited's (SECL) Gevra open-cast coal mine, located within the Hardi Bazar police station jurisdiction, stated an official.

Preliminary details suggest that the trio had allegedly entered the mining area intending to steal coal when unexpectedly, a section of the boundary wall between the Dipka and Gevra mines gave way, causing the collapse, the official revealed.

In the unfortunate accident, Vishal Yadav (18) and Dhan Singh Kanwar (24) became trapped under the coal debris and succumbed, while Sahil Dhanwar sustained injuries.

Upon receiving information, teams from both the mine management and police promptly arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations.

The injured individual was transported to the district hospital for medical treatment, and the two deceased bodies were recovered, the official confirmed, noting that further investigation is ongoing.

SECL spokesperson Sanish Chandra mentioned that the trio might have been attempting to extract coal from the mine's boundary area, which led to the coal layer's collapse.

Initial investigations indicate that the individuals accessed the mine without proper authorization and safety measures, circumventing mine security protocols, he explained.

The SECL management has urged the public to refrain from engaging in such dangerous and illegal activities.
