A tragic incident in Kolkata has left the city in shock after the body of a Class 8 student was discovered in New Town, revealing a horrifying crime. The young girl reportedly left her home after a disagreement with her mother over her studies, leaving behind a note before she departed around 10 pm. When she did not return, her worried family lodged a missing person's report at New Town Police Station in the early hours of Friday.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, authorities noted that the girl boarded an e-rickshaw shortly after leaving home. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Soumitra Roy, was last seen with her. According to police reports, Roy drove the girl to a secluded area where she was allegedly sexually assaulted. When she attempted to call for help, police allege that Roy strangled her.

The next morning, residents of Lohar Pul in New Town discovered the girl’s half-naked body on a plot owned by the West Bengal Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation. The police noted signs of strangulation and scratch marks on her body, suspecting she was raped before being killed.

The post-mortem examination conducted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is expected to confirm the cause of death. Meanwhile, Soumitra Roy has been arrested and confessed to the crime, with no evidence pointing to the involvement of others.

Interestingly, Roy's wife informed the police about his troubling past, revealing that he had a history of abusive behavior and was already facing legal action for a molestation case in his hometown of Ranaghat.

This tragic incident underscores a grim narrative of safety and justice that continues to haunt communities. The authorities are expected to take swift action as the case unfolds.
