Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (PTI): Zumba, a dynamic fitness program introduced in Kerala's schools by the General Education Department as part of its anti-drug initiative, is encountering backlash from certain Muslim groups citing moral concerns. The initiative was rolled out in response to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's directive, which highlighted the potential of Zumba to alleviate stress among students and subsequently mitigate drug abuse.
Starting this academic year, numerous schools have incorporated Zumba sessions. However, criticism has arisen, with Abdussamad Pookkottur, the state secretary of the Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), expressing his disapproval via a Facebook post. SYS is allied with the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a notable Sunni Muslim organization in the region. Pookkottur urged parents to reconsider the initiative, branding Zumba as contrary to moral standards.
In response to the controversy, State Higher Education Minister R. Bindhu defended the program, emphasizing the mental and physical health benefits it provides to both children and the general public. "We are in the 21st century, 2025, not the 19th century or medieval times. It’s important for everyone to adapt to the times," Bindhu stated, addressing reporters.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), affiliated with the Indian Union Muslim League, criticized the lack of preliminary research before the program's implementation. In a Facebook post, he argued, "My child is in a government school to receive quality education, not to partake in activities where boys and girls, dressed scantily, dance to music. While some may view this as progress, I am admittedly traditional." He further alleged that many disapprove silently due to fears of potential repercussions.
The General Education Department reiterated that Zumba is designed to enhance students’ mental health and support the anti-drug campaign "With Childhood and Youth," emphasizing education as the true addiction. Officials noted that children with mental health challenges are more susceptible to drug influences. Zumba is thus presented as a lively and beneficial activity to boost mental and physical wellness.
