Thiruvananthapuram, June 25 (PTI) - On Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan voiced his concerns about the current political climate in India, suggesting that the country is experiencing an undeclared Emergency. He accused the "Sangh Parivar government" of attempting to dismantle the Constitution.

Vijayan made these remarks in a Facebook post, in which he referred to the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi-led government in 1975 as "the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy." He pointed out that it has now been half a century since that period.

The Chief Minister elaborated that the June 25, 1975, declaration of Emergency was not an isolated or unpredictable occurrence but rather the "brutal culmination of years of authoritarian tendencies and the erosion of civil liberties in India." He believes that the 50th anniversary of the Emergency is a stark reminder of the "horror" of the current political environment in the country.

"The nation is presently in the grip of an undeclared Emergency. If the Constitution was manipulated by Indira Gandhi then, it is now under threat from the Sangh Parivar government," he claimed in his post. This statement was accompanied by a link to an article on the Emergency published in the CPI(M) publication, Deshabhimani.

Vijayan asserted that the Emergency is not just a historical lesson for those who experienced it, but it continues to be a "burning memory of state terror." He emphasized the importance of preserving the memories of that era as a source of motivation for future struggles and as a legacy for subsequent generations.

During the Emergency, Vijayan, a prominent CPI(M) leader, was imprisoned for 18 months for his role in organizing "underground political activities" in Kerala. While in custody, he reportedly endured police torture.
