New Delhi, May 27 (PTI) The most powerful single-unit electric locomotive ever developed for Indian Railways, boasting 9000 horsepower, was recently flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dahod, Gujarat, according to the railway ministry.

Previously, freight locomotives operated at 4500 or 6000 HP. Existing 12,000 HP engines achieve their power through coupling two 6000 HP units.

In contrast, the locomotive from Dahod provides a unified, high-powered solution, capable of hauling significantly longer and heavier freight trains with increased efficiency.

This advancement, as noted by the ministry, means fewer trips for the same volume of goods, enhancing turnaround times and reducing congestion, thus improving freight efficiency.

The new 9000 HP locomotive offers a crucial solution for Indian Railways' congestion issues on high-density freight routes, according to the ministry.

With fewer locomotives required to pull heavier loads, rail traffic can be optimised, alleviating pressure on busy corridors. By replacing multiple engines with a high-performance locomotive, Indian Railways anticipates reduced operating costs, lowered manpower needs, and decreased energy consumption. These efficiencies are expected to lower logistics costs for industries, offering more competitive pricing and streamlined supply chains.

In 2022, Prime Minister Modi announced Dahod's resurgence as a railway manufacturing hub. This vision materialised through a partnership with Siemens India and the establishment of a world-class facility following a transparent tendering process.

The facility is designed to produce 1,200 advanced electric freight locomotives with a robust 9000 HP capacity, underscoring India's engineering ingenuity and industrial aspiration.

Furthermore, the factory is equipped to produce both Broad Gauge locomotives for Indian Railways and Standard Gauge locomotives for export, thereby enhancing India's standing in the global rail manufacturing market.

With an impressive 89 per cent of components made in India, the project aligns seamlessly with the 'Make in India' and 'Make for World' objectives. The high-quality, cost-effective production makes these locomotives highly exportable, providing India with new opportunities in international railway supply chains.

The ministry highlighted the facility's commitment to sustainability, earning a 'Green Manufacturing' designation due to its use of green energy in the manufacturing process. The locomotive features the factory-fitted Kavach, India's indigenous train collision avoidance system, alongside modern enhancements like air-conditioned driver cabins with low noise and minimal vibrations, prioritising safety and comfort.

Regarding employment, the ministry reported that approximately 85 per cent of the jobs created through this infrastructure development have been secured by local youth.

The 9000 HP locomotive is poised to become the linchpin of an advanced freight ecosystem. Its power, efficiency, and sophisticated design aim to make Indian Railways more competitive, sustainable, and equipped to meet future demands.
