For the promotion of more than 200 women officers, the Indian Army is organising a special selection board from 9 January 2023 - this is what the Union government told the Supreme Court during a hearing on 13 December 2022.

The top court was hearing a petition filed by 34 women Army officers who claim that junior male officers were being given preference in promotion to combat and commanding roles.

The Supreme Court said that before the results of the special selection board are announced, the judges should get an updated report.

While hearing the matter on December 9, the apex court had asked the Army to put its "house in order", saying it feels the Army has not been "fair" to the women officers who have alleged delay in promotion after being granted permanent commission on the directions of the top court in 2020.
