A report released by think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has revealed that India has surpassed Pakistan in terms of nuclear arsenal.

The report said that the number of nuclear warheads with India in January this year stood at 172, while Pakistan has 170 of them. A year before, India’s nuclear warhead tally stood at 164.

“India slightly expanded its nuclear arsenal in 2023. Both India and Pakistan continued to develop new types of nuclear delivery system in 2023. While Pakistan remains the main focus of India’s nuclear deterrent, India appears to be placing growing emphasis on longer-range weapons, including those capable of reaching targets throughout China,” the SIPRI said.

The report further said that China’s nuclear arsenal increased to 500 warheads from 410 a year before.

China is only behind US, Russia, UK and France on the list, while India is positioned just below China.
