Hundreds of people turned up as the mortal remains of Agniveer Gawate Akshay Laxman were brought to his residence in Pimpalgaon Sarai village of Maharashtra's Buldhana district.

Akshay died due to "medical complications arising out of high-altitude conditions" in Siachen Glacier. He was the first Agniveer to die in the line of duty.

His father, Laxman Gawate told ANI "After getting a B.Com degree, he wanted to join the Army. I last spoke to him on October 20. He had asked me if I was keeping well and if his brother and other family members were doing fine."

The Indian Army said the family will get ₹48 lakh non-contributory insurance and an ex gratia of ₹44 lakh among other monetary benefits.
