Ranchi, June 30 (PTI) - Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar paid tribute to the sacrifices of the tribal warriors of the Santhal rebellion on the occasion of 'Hul Diwas' and sent their greetings to the people. Hul Diwas commemorates the Santhal rebellion of 1855-56 against British rule. The uprising, also known as the Santhal Hul, was led by two brothers, Sido and Kanhu Murmu, in the region that is now Jharkhand. "We salute the struggle and martyrdom of the great heroes of the Hul rebellion, the immortal martyrs Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, Phoolo-Jhano, and other brave martyrs. Our heroes of the Hul rebellion kindled the spirit of tribal identity against the exploitations and atrocities of British rule and moneylenders, also defending water, forest, and land," Soren stated on social media. He stressed that the lessons from their brave ancestors will forever inspire the pursuit of justice and self-respect. "Long live the immortal brave martyrs Sido and Kanhu! May Jharkhand's valiant martyrs live on! Hail Jharkhand!" Soren exclaimed. Governor Gangwar joined in extending greetings to the tribal community and paying homage to the Santhal rebellion fighters. "Their resistance against British rule will be an everlasting source of inspiration for future generations to combat injustice and serve the nation," Gangwar posted on X. The rebellion, originating in Bhognadih village, was directed against the exploitation of the Santhal people by the British and local landlords.
