In the past five years, the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda has expelled 22 students due to their involvement in ragging and indiscipline, according to college principal Milap Sharma.
The institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging, with five students expelled just in the last year for such offenses, Sharma informed PTI.
Highlighting the gravity of such incidents, Sharma recounted an incident where a student faced rustication and a hefty fine of Rs 1.20 lakh for stabbing another student during Holi celebrations.
The college’s stern stance on ragging stems from a tragic 2009 incident when Aman Satya Kachroo, a 19-year-old MBBS student, lost his life after being brutally beaten by four seniors in the boys' hostel. This incident occurred on the college campus near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district.
Dr Munish Saroch, the member secretary of the college's Anti-Ragging Committee, emphasized that the expulsion of 22 students reflects the administration's firm resolve to eliminate ragging. He also underscored the importance of implementing stronger preventive measures to safeguard students and maintain discipline within the institution.
