Heavy Rainfall Hits Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Sep 1 (PTI) - Several regions across Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh experienced heavy rainfalls on Monday. Ludhiana recorded the most significant rainfall at 216.70 mm. According to the Meteorological Department, various locations in these states witnessed rainfall over the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Monday. In Punjab, rainfall was recorded in places such as Amritsar (24.1 mm), Patiala (80.4 mm), Pathankot (3.6 mm), Bathinda (3 mm), Faridkot (10.2 mm), Gurdaspur (2.7 mm), SBS Nagar (112.7 mm), Mohali (64 mm), Mansa (42 mm), and Rupnagar (82.5 mm). Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, saw 76.5 mm of rainfall.

In Haryana, Ambala received 48.4 mm, Hisar 11.8 mm, Karnal 12.8 mm, Narnaul 66 mm, Rohtak 13.4 mm, Sirsa 130 mm, Panchkula 57 mm, Panipat 33 mm, and Gurugram recorded 9.5 mm. Meanwhile, Punjab is currently facing severe flooding, driven by the swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, alongside the seasonal rivulets which have been exacerbated by heavy rains in the catchment areas situated in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Villages most severely affected by these floods include those in the districts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar.

Relief and rescue operations, carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Punjab Police, and local district authorities, are diligently continuing in the affected regions to alleviate the situation.
