Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on January 16 said that the government is going to bring in tighter rules to combat the rise of deepfakes within a week, adding that earlier advisories were not being adhered to by several online platforms.

The minister's response comes a day after Sachin Tendulkar's deepfake video went viral on social media, prompting the cricketing legend to issue a clarification and urging the fans to not fall for misinformation.

This is the second time a deepfake video has raised concerns on digital security after a similar incident involving actor Rashmika Mandanna came to the fore last year.
