Panaji, Jul 3 (PTI): The Goa government has declared a holiday for schools on Friday, July 4, following an 'orange alert' from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

State Education Director Shailesh Zingde outlined in a circular that the measure is primarily to ensure the safety of the students.

"Considering the nonstop rain and the alert by the IMD, which forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Goa, and prioritizing the safety of young school children, a decision has been made by the competent authority to declare a holiday on Friday for all schools in Goa," stated the circular.

Zingde further noted that while the holiday applies to students and teachers, those educators assigned to training will still need to attend their sessions.

The government advises students to remain indoors and avoid risky areas such as flooded streets, riverbanks, and other potentially dangerous locations.

In the past two days, Goa has experienced significant rainfall.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rains on July 4, with a subsequent yellow alert, indicating moderate rainfall, from July 5-9.
