Shillong, July 30 (PTI) The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council in Meghalaya demolished six illegally constructed houses, an official announced on Wednesday.
The demolition took place on Tuesday along the state’s border with Assam.
According to GHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member Nikman Ch Marak, the council had previously issued notices to the settlers who were unable to provide the necessary property documents.
"They could not present documents to verify land ownership and continued occupying the area past the deadline, obligating us to take action," he informed PTI.
Marak highlighted that repeated encroachment attempts by people of Assam origin have been occurring on council land.
"The council is now collaborating closely with local leaders, such as Nokmas and Rangbah Shnongs, to identify and prevent such activities," he stated.
"As Assam has implemented stringent measures against encroachments within its borders, we must also act to safeguard our land in the border areas," he added.
