Chandigarh, June 27 (PTI): In a tragic incident in Punjab's Batala, Harjit Kaur, mother of the incarcerated gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and her companion lost their lives after being gunned down by unidentified assailants on motorcycles, police reported on Friday.

Harjit Kaur, aged 52, was gravely wounded during the attack which occurred on Thursday around 9:30 pm. She was transported to a hospital in Amritsar but succumbed to her injuries, according to a senior police official from Batala, who provided details via phone.

The attack, captured on CCTV, took place on Qadian road in the Civil Lines area. The footage reveals the assailant, positioned as a pillion rider on a motorcycle, indiscriminately firing at the victims inside a stationary vehicle.

"Unidentified miscreants on a motorcycle opened fire on Harjit Kaur and another individual named Karanvir Singh while they were in an SUV. Harjit was taken to a hospital in Amritsar but did not survive, whereas Karanvir was pronounced dead at the Batala Civil Hospital," stated Paramveer Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Batala.

The attackers fled the scene immediately. The police have lodged a case and organized teams to capture the perpetrators, informed the DSP. "The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation," he added.

Both victims received gunshot wounds in their face, chest, and abdomen. They were reportedly returning from Tarn Taran on Thursday night when the incident occurred, authorities disclosed.

Harjit Kaur, originally from Bhagwanpur, had been residing in Batala in a rented accommodation for the last two to three years.

The FIR has been filed based on the account of Karanvir's father.

Social media posts have emerged claiming responsibility for the attack, suggesting Karanvir was specifically targeted. When questioned about assertions from members of a rival gang of Bhagwanpuria taking responsibility, the DSP mentioned that the investigation is underway.

Earlier, in March, the detained gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was relocated from the Bathinda central jail to Assam's Silchar jail under the PIT-NDPS Act.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had detained Bhagwanpuria under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

Jaggu Bhagwanpuria is also under Punjab police custody in connection with the 2022 murder case of singer Sidhu Moosewala, among several other legal cases.
