Bhubaneswar/Berhampur, June 17 (PTI) — In a shocking incident that has caused widespread outrage, ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the gang rape of a 20-year-old undergraduate student at the renowned Gopalpur beach in Odisha. The shocking episode unfolded on Sunday night when the victim visited the beach with her boyfriend, who is also her classmate, to mark the Raja festival.

According to the complaint filed at the Gopalpur police station, the couple was sitting in an isolated area when a group of ten men accosted them. The group allegedly overpowered the boyfriend and proceeded to assault the young woman.

Speaking to PTI, a police official confirmed that initially, seven suspects were detained for questioning, but subsequent investigation led to the arrest of all ten accused. The swift action by law enforcement resulted in the capture of the suspects as they attempted to escape to another state.

The survivor has undergone a medical examination, said the police officer. The victim resides in a private accommodation with three other women, according to the police.

Responding to the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida stated that she has communicated with SP Saravana Vivek M, instructing a comprehensive investigation and implementation of measures to prevent future occurrences of such heinous acts.

The incident has sent ripples of shock throughout the state, given that tourists from various regions frequent Gopalpur beach in the Ganjam district.
