Imphal, Sep 15 (PTI) - On Sunday night, two major rivers in Manipur's Imphal valley breached their embankments, leading to the flooding of extensive agricultural and residential areas, officials reported on Monday. The Iril river overflowed in the Kshetrigao region, inundating farmland, residential areas, and roads in the Imphal East district. Similarly, the Wangjing river surpassed its danger level, causing flooding in the Sangaiyumpham and Wangjing areas of the Thoubal district.
A relief camp at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex suffered severe waterlogging as a result. Additionally, an iron bridge at Yairipok across the Thoubal river was swept away by strong currents, severing connections to several villages between Imphal East and Thoubal districts. The Manipur Fire Services team conducted a successful rescue operation, evacuating more than 100 stranded residents from Yairipok Khoirom Mayai Leikai in Imphal East, moving them to temporary relief centers. The residence of Congress state president Keisham Meghachandra in Wangkhem, Thoubal district, was also affected by the floods.
