Pune, May 30 (PTI) – In a landmark event, the first cohort of 17 women cadets graduated from the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune on Friday, marking the culmination of the academy's inaugural co-educational batch. These women stood proudly alongside over 300 male cadets as they completed their training at the iconic institution.
The cadets made their way past the ‘Antim Pag’ at the Khetrpal Parade Ground, a place renowned as the “cradle of leadership” for its role in shaping future leaders of the armed forces at the tri-service training academy in Khadakwasla.
Gen V K Singh, former Army Chief and the current governor of Mizoram, served as the reviewing officer for this momentous Passing Out Parade.
This first group of women cadets entered the NDA as part of the 148th course in 2022, following a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in 2021, which directed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to allow women to sit for the entrance examination to the academy.
The parade was commanded by Academy Cadet Captain, Udayveer Negi, representative of the 148th course.
“Today marks a uniquely significant milestone in the history of this esteemed academy,” said Gen Singh, “as the first batch of female cadets passes out from the NDA. This event symbolizes an important step forward in our collective journey towards greater inclusivity and empowerment.”
Gen Singh praised these young women as the embodiment of “Naari Shakti,” highlighting their role not only in women's development but also in women-led development.
He expressed his vision for the future, stating, “I envision a time, not too far from now, when one of these young women may ascend to the highest roles within the service they join.”
