Pahalgam (J-K), May 27 (PTI): National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday emphasized that the atmosphere of fear in Kashmir has significantly diminished and encouraged tourists to once again visit the valley to appreciate its beauty.
The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir also appealed to the External Affairs Ministry to work towards revoking the negative travel advisories issued by some countries against visiting J-K.
The region's tourism sector suffered a blow after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that resulted in the loss of 26 lives.
"What happened here (Pahalgam attack) was tragic and should not have occurred," Abdullah stated to PTI Videos during his visit to the tourist resort. "The people were joyfully coming, engaged in their work without seeking government jobs. The demand for accommodation in Pahalgam was such that no rooms were available," he added.
Abdullah, along with some friends, visited the Pahalgam Golf Course and engaged in a game of golf.
He acknowledged that the attack instilled fear but commended the government for taking measures to improve the security situation in the valley. "There was fear, but now it has significantly declined. The number of visitors to Pahalgam and Gulmarg is testament to this change," he observed.
He expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank God, the fear is dissipating. The government has taken steps to enhance security. I believe more people should visit."
He urged the Centre to work towards withdrawing foreign travel advisories against visiting J-K. "I also request the Central government and the Foreign Minister to consider lifting the restrictions imposed by foreign countries. Peace is present, and we hope it remains. Many foreigners are keen on visiting, and given the opportunity, I believe they will," he remarked, likely referencing Pakistan.
Abdullah praised the expansion of golf and its inclusion in the Khelo India games, highlighting the game's potential to earn India medals in international competitions.
He lauded Kashmir's natural beauty, saying he has yet to see such splendor elsewhere. "I urge those watching to visit, to strengthen the country by experiencing and sharing this beauty. Fear should not guide us," he stated.
Regarding the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, set to begin on July 3, Abdullah conveyed its significance. "This pilgrimage has deep roots. I hope more pilgrims visit and share the beauty of the region with others," he said.
Commenting on J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's plans to hold meetings in Pahalgam with his council of ministers and tourism stakeholders, the NC president noted the importance of demonstrating peace. "When the cabinet is here, it sends a clear message. Engaging with stakeholders like ponywallahs, palki wallahs, hoteliers, and taxi drivers is crucial, as they bear the brunt of economic downturns," he explained. "Many have taken loans for improvements. We must show our renowned hospitality once more."
Addressing rumors of internal party differences, particularly with Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Abdullah dismissed concerns. "Attempts to destabilize us are not new. They happened during my father's time and mine. We remain focused on resolving public issues, and expect significant positive changes in the coming years, Insha Allah (God willing)," he concluded.
