Jaipur, Jul 2 (PTI): A tragic incident unfolded in Rajasthan's Barmer district as four members of a family, including a woman, reportedly died by suicide by leaping into a water tank, police informed on Wednesday.

The heartbreaking episode took place in Undu village, where Shivlal, aged 35, his wife Kavita, 32, and their two sons, aged 8 and 6, were discovered lifeless on Tuesday evening inside a tank located outside their residence in Brahmano Ki Dhani, within the jurisdiction of Sheo Police Station.

Preliminary investigations suggest Shivlal allegedly took this drastic step, jumping into the tank with his family, after securing the house.

This tragedy was brought to light when Shivlal’s younger brother, unable to reach the couple via phone, dispatched a neighbor to investigate, subsequently alerting the police.

Sheo DSP Manaram Garg stated, "The bodies were found in the tank on Tuesday evening. The in-laws were informed, and the retrieval was carried out on Wednesday morning in their presence, as they could not arrive during the night."

The deceased were transported to the mortuary at Bhiyad CHC for a post-mortem examination.

Kavita's uncle, Gopilal, mentioned to reporters, "Shivlal aimed to construct a separate house using funds allotted under the PM Awas Yojana. However, his brother and mother opposed this plan. This ongoing harassment compelled him to draft a suicide note on June 29."

Family members revealed that although Shivlal penned the note two days prior, he did not proceed with the act immediately. But on Tuesday, with his mother visiting his brother in Barmer and his father engaged in religious activities elsewhere, Shivlal and Kavita chose to switch off their phones and allegedly took the tragic step.

Police have recorded statements from relatives on both sides. Officials stated they are investigating the allegations of domestic harassment under IPC sections related to the abetment of suicide.

Sheo Police have indicated that further inquiries will include examining the contents of the purported suicide note and exploring family disputes as part of the ongoing investigation.
