Gangtok, Jul 2 (PTI) A court in Sikkim's Pakyong district has handed down a decade-long rigorous imprisonment sentence to a former police head constable involved in a drugs case.

On Tuesday, a Special Judge in Pakyong district sentenced Pem Tshering Bhutia to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and levied a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the Sikkim Anti Drugs Act (SADA).

Bhutia was found guilty of being in possession of a commercial quantity of drugs, with the case originating in 2021.

Reacting to the judgement, Pakyong district's SSP, Paru Ruchal, emphasized that the verdict underscores the principle that the law is impartial, and no one, including police personnel, is exempt from it. Any police personnel found involved in drug-related offences will face stringent legal repercussions akin to any other lawbreaker.

SSP Ruchal stated that Pakyong Police is committed to a zero-tolerance stance against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Through relentless surveillance, strategic interventions, and stringent law enforcement, the police force aims to eradicate the scourge of drugs from society.
