Erode (Tamil Nadu) Aug 15 (PTI) Tragedy struck in Erode district as two college students lost their lives by drowning in a canal, police reported on Friday.

According to the Bangalapudur police, a group of five students, all aged 19 and from Goundan Palayam, Coimbatore, were involved in the unfortunate incident. The students, including Sibiraj and Sakthinekeshan, were pursuing computer science at a private college in Coimbatore. They traveled to Thooka Naicken Palayam (T.N. Palayam) on Thursday afternoon in a car and stopped at Vaniputhur Thottipalam to take a bath in the Arakkankottai canal.

However, the outing took a tragic turn when Sibiraj and Sakthinekeshan remained unaccounted for after the other three students emerged from the canal. Desperate, the group searched for their friends for over 30 minutes and then alerted the Bangalapudur police and Fire and Rescue Services in Sathyamangalam.

Upon arrival, police and trained swimmers from the Fire and Rescue Service conducted an intensive search operation lasting more than an hour. Tragically, the effort concluded with the recovery of only the deceased bodies.

The Bangalapudur police have filed a case of death due to drowning and have informed the bereaved families about the incident.
