Kolkata, Aug 6 (PTI) A newborn girl was discovered and rescued from a garbage dump in Howrah on a Wednesday morning by an alert e-rickshaw driver, officials revealed. Driving through Panchanantala in Bally, Chandan Mallick, the driver, noticed something amiss near the garbage heap situated beneath the Nivedita Setu, they added. Upon closer inspection, he was horrified to find a newborn girl lying amidst the rubbish. Reacting promptly, Mallick, with assistance from several passersby, rushed the infant to a nearby private nursing home, where she is presently receiving medical care. "It appeared that the infant had been there for at least three to four hours," Mallick recounted to reporters. "Insects had already begun to gather on her body. We immediately decided to transport her to the hospital. Those responsible for this act must face justice," he asserted. The police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify those responsible for abandoning the newborn.
