The unfortunate event unfolded on Sunday when Sampat Singh, aged 40, was electrocuted at his rented accommodation while trying to fix a ceiling fan. He collapsed immediately, and despite being rushed to Deoria Medical College, doctors declared him brought dead on arrival, according to Durgesh Kumar Singh, the in-charge of Deoria Sadar police station.
Sampat, originally from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, was residing in Abubakar Nagar locality of Deoria city. He earned a livelihood by selling ice cream but decided to stay home on the day of the incident due to rainy weather, police reported.
In a separate accident in Kushinagar district, a young girl and her mother sustained severe injuries after encountering a high-tension electrical wire.
The incident occurred when 13-year-old Afreen accidentally touched a low-hanging wire while working in a field in Mansurganj village. Her mother, Sehana Khatoon, aged 37, suffered an electric shock while trying to rescue her daughter, as detailed by Chandra Bhushan Prajapati, the in-charge of Kaptanganj police station.
Alerted by their cries, village residents rushed to their aid, using wooden sticks to safely separate the mother and daughter from the deadly wire. Following the incident, both Afreen and her mother were admitted to a private hospital in Mansurganj with severe burns. It was noted that Afreen remained unconscious for nearly two hours.
Villagers have expressed concern about the dangerously low, approximately four-foot-high wire carrying 11,000 volts, declaring it a substantial hazard for those working in the fields.
