Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 3 (PTI) — Dr. Haris Chirakkal, renowned for his outspoken views, has recently found himself at the center of controversy after drawing attention to a significant shortage of surgical equipment at the government medical college in Thiruvananthapuram. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dr. Chirakkal, who heads the Urology Department at the institution, admitted that while his method of highlighting the issue was flawed, his motivation was to bring awareness to an urgent problem. “I realize my approach was incorrect—perhaps a mistake—but I felt it was my only choice,” he confessed. Dr. Chirakkal, whose original Facebook post did not target the state government or health department, explained that his criticism was intended for the slow and indifferent pace of bureaucracy.

“When I shared the post, I didn’t anticipate such repercussions. My sole aim was to alert the health department, but it spiraled beyond my control, impacting the CPI(M), the Health Minister, and the CM, all of whom have shown me support previously,” he elaborated. Notably, Dr. Chirakkal refuted claims by the opposition UDF that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan had used intimidating language against him.

Despite the fallout, Dr. Chirakkal courageously stated he is unafraid of the repercussions stemming from his actions. “If I lose my job here, I am confident of finding employment elsewhere. I joined the government sector to aid the common people, not due to a lack of opportunities abroad or in the private sector.” He assured that all pertinent evidence had been submitted to the committee investigating the matter and that actionable recommendations were included to address the delays in equipment procurement.

Furthermore, Dr. Chirakkal expressed his readiness to face any penalties. He has already transferred his responsibilities to a junior colleague to ensure uninterrupted departmental functioning should disciplinary action follow. This incident is not the first time Dr. Chirakkal has made such revelations, having boldly faced consequences in the past. His recent Facebook post emphasized the dire consequences of equipment shortages, namely the postponement of surgeries, despite repeated official assurances, which left patients in distress and awaiting crucial treatment.
