Dispose unclaimed bodies in respectable manner: SC panel on Manipur

A three-member committee formed by the Supreme Court on Manipur violence suggested that the state government publish and circulate the list of people who have died and make efforts to “expeditiously identify the next of kin”.

The panel asked the Manipur government to ensure that the victims' kin receive the stipulated ex-gratia payment.

The committee further said that the bodies that remain unclaimed must be disposed of in a respectable manner.

About 175 people have died in clashes between the Meitie and Kuki communities, of which 96 bodies remain unclaimed.

This is mainly because families of one community have been unable to visit hospitals in areas dominated by the other community to identify and claim the bodies.
