Delhi on high alert as Assembly Elections begin amid tight security

Delhi is on high alert as voting for the high-stakes Assembly elections begins on Wednesday, with over 30,000 police personnel and 220 paramilitary companies deployed across the national capital to ensure peaceful polling.

With over 1.56 crore eligible voters, the elections will decide the fate of 699 candidates across 70 constituencies. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress aim for a comeback.

Robust Security Measures in Place
Special security arrangements have been implemented, including drone surveillance, Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at nearly 3,000 sensitive polling booths.

Special Commissioner of Police Devesh Chandra Srivastva stated that all 65 border points with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been sealed, with heavy security deployment in place.

Crackdown on MCC Violations
Since January 7, when the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced, Delhi Police has:

  • Registered 1,076 MCC violation cases and detained 34,250 individuals
  • Seized 469 illegal firearms, 513 cartridges, and arrested 491 people under the Arms Act
  • Confiscated 1.1 lakh litres of illicit liquor and arrested 1,381 people
  • Seized 196.6 kg of drugs worth ₹77.9 crore and 1,200 banned injections, leading to 177 arrests      
    With the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies on high alert, authorities have assured a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. The results will be declared on February 8.
