Dharamshala, Jul 2 (PTI): Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has clarified that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue, with the Gaden Phodrang Trust being the only body authorized to recognize future reincarnations. This announcement dispels doubts regarding succession following his demise. The Gaden Phodrang Trust, established by the Dalai Lama's office in 2015, will solely oversee this significant tradition.

The declaration was made by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, also known as Lhama Thondup, on May 21, 2025. His office released the statement on Wednesday, just days before his 90th birthday. In addition, a video approximately 5.57 minutes in length, featuring his speech in Tibetan, was made available.

In the past, the Dalai Lama had suggested that Tibet's sacred tradition might cease, or a successor could be a woman or originate from outside China. However, China, which views Lhama Thondup as a separatist figure, asserted that the identity of the successor should be approved by Beijing through a long-standing ritual.

A week-long celebration began at Tsuglagkhang, the chief temple in McLeodganj near Dharamshala, on June 30, marking the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday. This celebration is notable since, in 2011, he mentioned he would decide the continuation of his institution at this age.

The statement released emphasized, "I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue, and reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has exclusive authority to recognize the future reincarnation. No other entity holds influence in this matter."

Previously, in a meeting on September 24, 2011, with Tibetan spiritual leaders, the Dalai Lama highlighted that as early as 1969, he expressed that the continuation should be determined by the concerned people. He planned that at 90 years of age, consultations with high Lamas, the Tibetan populace, and adherents of Tibetan Buddhism would evaluate the institution's future.

"I have received messages from Tibetans globally and other followers indicating a desire for the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution," the statement confirmed. He emphasized that the responsibility for recognizing reincarnation lies with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which will consult heads of various Tibetan Buddhist traditions and Dharma Protectors with lineage ties. They are instructed to execute all recognition processes following tradition.
