Thane, May 26 (PTI) - The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district has recorded its first COVID-19 fatality as a woman passed away while receiving treatment in a hospital, an official disclosed on Monday.
Dr. Deepa Shukla, the Medical Health Officer in charge of KDMC's Medical Health Department, confirmed this development. Four individuals tested positive for COVID-19 within the municipal boundaries after a surge in cases in various parts of Maharashtra, including neighboring Mumbai, she reported.
Among them, one woman has succumbed to the virus; another patient with mild symptoms was discharged following treatment, a third remains hospitalized in a private facility, and the fourth has been moved to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa for further care, Shukla explained.
Despite these developments, Shukla urged residents to remain calm while stressing the importance of adhering to health protocols.
The Medical Health Department advised the elderly and those with co-morbidities to avoid crowded, enclosed areas and to consistently wear masks in public places. It emphasized the significance of hand hygiene, refraining from public spitting, and covering the nose and mouth with a handkerchief or similar items when sneezing or coughing.
Individuals experiencing symptoms such as a cold, cough, body ache, sore throat, or difficulty breathing are urged to consult a doctor immediately and prioritize COVID-19 testing. Additionally, avoiding contact with anyone displaying respiratory symptoms is recommended.
KDMC has set up isolation rooms at Bai Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan and Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivali, both offering coronavirus testing facilities, complete with ventilation systems, according to the department.
