Kannur, Kerala - August 25 (PTI): Congress leader and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has been suspended from the primary membership of the Congress party, as announced by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Sunny Joseph on Monday.
Despite this action, Joseph dismissed demands from political adversaries for Mamkootathil to resign from his MLA position.
The controversy stems from allegations by Malayalam actress Rini Ann George, who accused "a young leader" from a prominent political party of misconduct. This accusation led to protests from the BJP and the CPI(M)'s youth wing, DYFI. Furthermore, Mamkootathil was already the subject of an internal party investigation.
Compounding his difficulties, additional allegations of similar misconduct have emerged from several women and a transgender person, increasing the pressure from political opponents for Mamkootathil to relinquish his MLA post.
In addressing the media, Joseph confirmed that the decision to suspend Mamkootathil from the Congress party was "unanimous."
The state party leadership had previously indicated that any decisions concerning the matter would follow discussions among senior party leaders.
