New Delhi, Jun 23 (PTI) The Congress has criticized US President Donald Trump's decision to deploy American air power against Iran, describing the move as a contradiction of his own appeals for ongoing discussions with Tehran. Additionally, the Congress party censured the Indian government for its lack of response to both the US airstrikes and the aggressive actions by Israel.

The opposition emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy and dialogue with Iran. Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, stated that President Trump's action undermines his previous calls for dialogue with Iran. He stressed the necessity for the Indian government to show greater moral courage in this situation.

"The Modi government has neither criticized nor condemned the US bombings or Israel's aggression, including targeted assassinations," Ramesh noted on the social media platform X. He also pointed to the government's silence on the alleged genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Ramesh's statements follow the US bombing of key Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, an act that has intertwined the US more deeply in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressed India's "deep concern" over the conflict and urged for an immediate de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.

The US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities have raised concerns over a potential regional conflict expansion, with international communities urging caution.
