New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a supplementary charge sheet against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Paresh Paul, along with councillors Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh, in connection with the murder and criminal conspiracy linked to the death of BJP leader Avijit Sarkar during the post-election violence in West Bengal in 2021, officials said on Wednesday.
In its second supplementary charge sheet filed before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Sealdah on Monday, the CBI has listed 15 additional individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections related to criminal conspiracy (120-B), murder (302), and disappearance of evidence (201), among others.
There has been no immediate comment from Paresh Paul regarding the charges.
Sarkar was reportedly killed in the Kankurgachi area on May 2, 2021, following the announcement of the West Bengal assembly election results.
The court has officially recognized the CBI charge sheets against all the accused, paving the way for the commencement of the trial.
The CBI took over the investigation from the West Bengal Police, adopting the FIR filed on May 2, 2021, at the Narkeldanga police station as its case following directions from the Calcutta High Court.
Prior to the CBI's involvement, the State Police's Homicide Squad, Detective Department, Kolkata, submitted a charge sheet on August 6, 2021, against 15 accused.
After taking over the case, the CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet on September 30, 2021, including 20 accused individuals, which includes the 15 initially charged by the State Police. The investigation remains ongoing, as confirmed by a CBI spokesperson in a statement.
