Mumbai, June 17 (PTI) – The mortal remains of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the pilot of the ill-fated Air India flight that tragically crashed in Ahmedabad last week, were brought to Mumbai on Tuesday, according to officials. The casket containing Sabharwal's remains was transported to Mumbai airport by a flight in the morning. It will be taken to his residence at Jal Vayu Vihar in Powai by his family, said an official.

The remains will be kept at his home for an hour to allow people to pay their respects, before being moved for the final rites at Chakala electric cremation ground. Sabharwal, aged 56, resided in Mumbai with his elderly parents.

The London-bound Air India flight AI-171, carrying 242 passengers and crew, met with disaster in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one on board the aircraft perished, along with 29 individuals on the ground, as the plane crashed into a medical complex.

The flight was under the command of Captain Sabharwal, who had amassed 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 hours to his credit, as previously stated by the DGCA.
