Maharajganj (UP), Oct 7 (PTI) A court in Maharajganj has sentenced a Brazilian national to one year of imprisonment for illegally entering India from Nepal.

The court also levied a fine of Rs 2,000 on Joaquim dos Santos Neto, 37, who hails from Rio de Janeiro.

The incident dates back to October 8, 2024, when authorities in Sonauli, near the Nepal border, spotted a foreign national entering India from the Nepalese side.

Upon interrogation, the individual identified himself as Joaquim dos Santos Neto and admitted that he had traveled to Nepal and subsequently entered India without a valid visa.

The police registered a case under The Foreigners Act and filed a chargesheet against him in court.

During the trial, the court found Neto guilty.

On Monday, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mukesh Yadav sentenced him to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a Rs 2,000 fine.

If he fails to pay the fine, Neto will serve an additional three months in jail, according to public prosecutor Pravindra Kumar Diwakar.
