Boat with 400 pilgrims runs aground off West Bengal coast, rescue on

A ferry boat carrying about 400 pilgrims ran aground near Kakdwip area off West Bengal coast on January 16.

The Indian Coast Guard launched a major operation to rescue the stranded people who were returning from Gangasagar pilgrimage after taking a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

In a statement, the Coast Guard said it deployed hovercrafts from Haldia and so far, around 140 pilgrims have been rescued.

It added that the boat ran aground due to poor visibility.
