Chandigarh, May 27 (PTI) A suspected Khalistani terrorist died in a blast while handling explosive materials at a vacant lot on the Majitha road bypass in Punjab’s Amritsar, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred around 9:30 am, with such force that it severed both arms of the individual involved.

Deputy Inspector General (Border Range) Satinder Singh indicated that the deceased is believed to have affiliations with terrorist organizations like Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

The man was reportedly on site to retrieve explosive devices when the detonation took place, according to Singh.

“The explosives were in his hands at the moment of the blast,” Singh informed reporters during a briefing in Amritsar.

“We are working to determine both his identity and the specific terror organization he was associated with,” Singh added.

When questioned, the DIG mentioned that the individual has not yet been identified.

“The circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that he was linked to a terrorist group,” Singh noted, adding that certain items found in the man’s possession have provided significant hints about his organizational ties.

A Forensic Science Laboratory team is examining the site to ascertain if an improvised explosive device (IED) or a grenade caused the blast.

Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh explained that the explosion likely resulted from mishandling during the retrieval of the explosive materials.

Residents reported a loud blast, which caused significant panic in the local area, now secured by police.

The DIG reassured the public, urging them not to panic with the promise, “We will soon resolve this case.”
