Kolkata, Sep 3 (PTI) BJP leader Rakesh Singh was arrested for allegedly being involved in the vandalism at the Congress' West Bengal unit headquarters in Kolkata, police reported on Wednesday. Singh, who had been on the run since the August 29 attack on Bidhan Bhavan in central Kolkata, was captured at a housing complex in the Tangra area, located in the eastern part of the city, according to a senior police officer. "We arrested him on Tuesday night in connection with the attack on the Congress office. He was in hiding there. The accused is scheduled to be presented in court on Wednesday," the officer stated. Singh was observed "engaging in the act of vandalising the Congress office", the officer added. The attack involved the defacement of cutouts of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders, as well as the tearing of Congress flags, the police said. The Kolkata Police have arrested several individuals linked to the August 29 incident, although Singh remained elusive until now. "Officers raided his residence on Sunday night, but he was not present. His son, Shivam Singh, underwent multiple interrogation sessions and was eventually taken into custody," the officer revealed. "While in hiding, Rakesh Singh released a video clip, threatening police and directing a verbal attack at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Two days after releasing that video, he was finally arrested," the police confirmed.
