New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) — The BJP on Thursday strongly condemned the recent vandalism at Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, urging global denunciation of this attack on the revered figure's legacy.

On Tuesday, a mob targeted and vandalized the Nobel laureate's home in Sirajganj district, raising concerns in India over the protection of cultural heritage.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, referencing media reports, accused groups like Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam of orchestrating the attack. He emphasized Tagore's status as a cornerstone of Bengal and Indian culture.

Patra also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her silence on the issue, suggesting her political motivations stemmed from viewing Bangladeshi infiltrators as an electoral base.

“She is driven by vote bank politics. We are driven by cultural politics,” Patra stated.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the inaction of the interim Bangladeshi government, led by Muhammad Yunus, and called for international solidarity against such incidents. His party, he said, believes in inclusivity and is appealing to nations that treasure morality and culture to unite in condemnation.

The vandalized site, known as Kachharibari, holds historical significance as it was where Tagore created many iconic works. It is recognized as a museum by the Bangladeshi government.

Patra highlighted the irony that Tagore not only penned India's national anthem but also that of Bangladesh, a nation now witnessing increased hardline activities since Sheikh Hasina's deposition last year.
