Patna, Sep 11 (PTI) Thirty canines, rigorously trained, are soon to be part of the Bihar Police’s dog squad. Currently honing their skills at Moinabad's Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) in Hyderabad, these dogs will join the force within the next two to three months, stated Additional Director General (CID) Parasnath on Wednesday.

Presently, the squad consists of 67 dogs. The upcoming addition will bring the total to 97, although the sanctioned capacity is 200. Recognizing the escalating reliance on these canine units, efforts are underway to expand the squad's numbers. Another procurement process is in progress to obtain 50 more dogs from the Home Guard Training Institute in Punjab, with finalization expected in the next two to three months.

Among the current members of the squad, 19 dogs specialize in identifying explosives, 21 are adept trackers, 21 are trained in detecting liquor, while six excel in discerning narcotic and psychotropic substances. The squad is comprised of 55 Labradors, six Belgian Malinois, four German Shepherds, and two Golden Retrievers, all of which are deployed across various police range headquarters.

The squad plays a crucial role in investigating criminal cases, locating intoxicant drugs, and performing spot inspections for VVIP events. Additionally, they are pivotal in detecting and seizing illegal liquor shipments, added the ADG.
