Ballia (UP), Oct 16 (PTI): In a series of dramatic early morning encounters on Thursday, the Ballia police successfully apprehended two criminals, one of whom is a murder suspect.

Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh reported on the first encounter occurring around 1 am in the Bairia area.

The incident began when a police team signalled a motorcyclist to halt near the Chanddiar Jayprakash Nagar embankment road in Risal Rai.

Instead of complying, the suspect sped off, triggering a chase by law enforcement.

When cornered, the man allegedly opened fire at the officers, prompting them to return fire in self-defense.

As a result, the suspect sustained an injury to his right leg.

Identified as Dharmendra Yadav, aged 28, from Sonbarsa village, the accused was detained and taken to the district hospital after receiving initial medical attention at the Sonbarsa community health center.

A country-made pistol and cartridges were reportedly recovered from him.

Yadav was wanted in connection with a murder case lodged on October 14 under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

He was allegedly planning to escape to Bihar, according to the SP.

Meanwhile, in another incident around 4.30 am, officers from Sikandarpur confronted another motorcyclist near the Khareed river road.

The rider attempted to flee but lost balance and fell.

Upon being cornered, he allegedly shot at the police but was wounded in his right leg by retaliatory police fire.

Identified as Shamim Qureshi, also known as Sonu, aged 23, from Bharatpur village, he also faces multiple criminal charges.

He was found in possession of a country-made pistol and cartridges.

Both accused are currently receiving medical treatment under police surveillance, officials confirmed.
