Thane, Jul 4 (PTI) – In a significant crackdown, a man has been apprehended on charges of misappropriating Rs 1.90 crore intended for ATM replenishment in Navi Mumbai, announced a police official on Friday. Dhanraj Bhoir, an ATM operator employed by a private company, allegedly committed the offense over several months from February to June this year, explained senior inspector Rajendra Kothe from Kalamboli police station.
Bhoir was entrusted with the responsibility of depositing cash into 16 ATMs situated across Kalamboli, Kamothe, and Kharghar. However, instead of performing his duty, he misappropriated Rs 1.90 crore and diverted the funds for his personal gains. The crime surfaced during an internal audit that unveiled discrepancies in ATM cash refill records, pinpointing Bhoir as the common link connecting all the affected ATMs.
Following the discovery, a case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal breach of trust and additional offenses, leading to Bhoir's arrest on Thursday. A thorough investigation is in progress to recover the embezzled amount and to determine whether Bhoir had any accomplices in executing this crime, confirmed inspector Kothe.
