Guwahati, Aug 28 (PTI) — In a significant operation, Assam's Sribhumi district authorities arrested four individuals in connection with drug trafficking activities.

Authorities seized heroin weighing approximately 650 grams, alongside 10,000 yaba tablets, with an estimated market value exceeding Rs 5 crore. This operation was carried out in the Puwamara area of the district.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on social media platform X on Wednesday night, emphasizing the ongoing efforts against illegal drug activities.

"In a major crackdown, @sribhumipolice seized 650 grams of heroin and 10,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 5 crore at Puwamara, arresting four drug peddlers. @assampolice remains resolute -- #AssamAgainstDrugs," he stated.

Yaba, meaning 'crazy medicine' in Thai, is a highly potent stimulant in tablet form, which contains methamphetamine.

Initially introduced in East Asia during World War II as a performance enhancer for soldiers, yaba has gained significant popularity among the youth in countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar, as reported by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
